DEPARTMENT OF KHASI
Khasi is the language
spoken mainly by the people residing in Meghalaya, Assam and Bangladesh and in
some other smaller pockets of India. It belongs to the Austro-Asiatic family
under the Monkhmer group of Language. Today there are about two million
speakers of this Language. Khasi, as a subject in St. Francis D’Assisi College
was started in 2010, the year that the College was established. As Khasi is a
Language that is still developing, the Syllabus is designed in such a way to
deepen the knowledge about the origin, development and progress of Khasi
Language.
The study dwells on
different forms of the Khasi Literature and on the contributions made by
various authors. The Honours Course in Khasi provides new inspirations and
insights enabling Students to love their Language and thus to pursue their
further studies on the Khasi Language. There is also great scope for research
work in Khasi Literature, including Linguistic, Folkloristic and Cultural Studies.
Aims and Prospects:
The Department of
Khasi, besides aiming to educate and impart knowledge to the students, it also
inculcates in the students the traditional Khasi values that the Ancients of
the past generation have handed down to the present generation. In this way, it
enables Students to face the challenges of our contemporary world. The
Department has a good number of students who take Khasi Honours, Khasi MIL and
Elective Khasi in the three-year Degree Course.
DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH
It is said that
English Language is like a Window to see the world. The Department of English
was introduced at the start of the College in 2010. From then on, it has grown in
terms of faculty and enrolment of Students. The Department offers English as an
Honours Subject and also as an Interdisciplinary Subject.
English Honours Course
will enable students to deepen in the knowledge of English literature. Different topics such as Essays, Dramas and
Poems are dealt with a critical mind and keen analysis. The study helps
students to see that Literature has always influenced social and political
thoughts at different periods of human history.
Besides traditional
way of lectures, the Course is designed with a variety of pedagogical methods
such as discussions and debates, group study, seminars, presentations, etc. also
the faculty members make a conscious and concerted effort to empower Students
in their real life situations by equipping them with the basic skills and
fundamentals of English communication.
Aims and Prospects:
The study of English
both as a Language and as literature offers prospective options for the English
Honours students in this age of globalization where one can work online at any
part of the globe. In this way, there is a great demand for certain skills such
as communication skills, writing skills, creativity and translation in
different sectors. Also as many competitive exams in India and in many parts of
the world have English as a compulsory paper, Study of English has become more
of a gateway to job opportunities.
DEPARTMENT OF
EDUCATION
The
Department of Education was started in 2010 – the year that the College was
established. The College offers Education as an Honours Subject as well as an
interdisciplinary elective Subject. The Department is not only concentrating on
textbook lecturing but also is shouldering the responsibility of imparting true
knowledge to the students, values and acquainting them with the innovative
practices in education, as well as personality development as a whole.
Career and
Prospects:
·Through studying of Education, Students can go for further studies, such as, Research in the field of Education.
·They can opt for teaching at the School and College levels.
·With Education, Students are better equipped to continue their B.Ed and/or M.Ed courses.
·With Education, administrative work especially in the field of Education becomes easier as there is an in-depth study about Educational Management.
·The Department is also enabling Students in the field for Guidance and counselling, adult and continuing education, as Counselling is part of Education.
·With Education, Students are also equipped to pursue Master Degree in Human Resource Management – so much in demand in the Business and Education sector of today.
·Education as a subject is inter-related to other disciplines such as psychology and sociology. So, it becomes easier for the students to opt for these disciplines.
DEPARTMENT
OF POLITICAL SCIENCE
The
Department of Political Science was established in 2010. The objective of the
Department is to impart knowledge of the Subject matter, such as different
political theories and systems, and to enable critical thinking abilities in
the Students – This is done by encouraging evaluation of political developments
from an observational and theoretical standpoint, developing skills in Research
Methodology, Writing, Presentation, Public Speaking, Debate, Quiz, Role Play
and Team Work.
The Department offers
Political Science as an Honours Subject and also as an Interdisciplinary
elective Subject.
Avenues
and Prospects:
·The Study of Political Science
develops and enables critical Avenues and Prospects – offering ample scope of
employment in careers such as law, policy analysts or advisors in both
governmental and non-governmental organizations, civil services, ministry,
journalism and in the teaching profession.
·Political Science also offers ample scope in the field of research whereby political scientists and researchers are most commonly involved with reviewing history and society, taking part in debates, reporting and communications.
·Political Scientists are often
required to serve as ambassadors and presenters on public policies, opinions
and programmes.
DEPARTMENT
OF SOCIOLOGY
The
Department of Sociology was established in the year 2010. It is said that
Humans are essentially social beings. So, this Course seeks to develop
sociological knowledge and skills in the Students so as to enable them to
critically think and analyse society and social issues.
The
Department, besides using the traditional Lectures, helps preparing Students
for social service careers. The Department offers Sociology as an Honours
Subject and also as an Interdisciplinary elective Subject.
Avenues and Prospects:
Learning of Sociology has lots of benefits – trained
Sociologists have many options in life, as Sociology is about understanding of human
behaviour at all levels of human relations.
·Besides offering the career of
teaching, trained Sociologists can sit for competitive exams at national/state
level and join in public administration and bureaucratic set up.
·They have a great chance to be involved in public and private sector undertakings – Banks, Corporations, Social work, business and in industries.
·They may contribute to society as urban planners, community workers, demographers, surveyors, researchers and many more. They have ample opportunity in NGO’s who aimed for social service.
·Sociology also offers valuable
preparation in various careers, such as Journalism, Tourism, print and
electronic Media, field work – research analysis, health care business and
other forms of managerial works.
DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY
The present
Moment has a preceding Moment in the past called History. Thus the experience
of the Past is important to understand the Present and thus to plan for the
Future. The Department of History in our College was established in the year
2010 – at the start of the College. The Department follows the syllabus
prescribed by the University – paying close attention to the civilizations of
the past in various aspects like the social, cultural, religious, economic,
political and important events in the history line are studied to understand
the philosophy of different epochs and events. Besides Lecture methods,
audio-visual methods, interactive seminars, group studies, discussions,
debates, visits to historical sites are also emphasized in the Department.
Avenues
and Prospects:
·As taking History as a Subject helps the Students to research the major social, political, cultural and economic events of the past, it offers teaching profession either in schools, colleges or at the university level.
·Students of History are also preferred in documentations especially in the Archives Department.
·Students of History have also preference in archaeology – thus there are employment prospects with the Archaeological survey of India.
·Students of History also have bright prospects in the
field of the booming Tourism sector, where they could organize guided tours –
explaining the historical significance of a particular location, etc.
DEPARTMENT OF
ECONOMICS
The Department of
Economics came into existence at the time of the establishment of the College.
Economics is a social science that studies the use of resources, production –
distribution – consumption of goods and services. Students who opt for Economics
are usually those who prepare themselves to be entrepreneurs and desiring to
study the complex issues that are vital to society.
Avenues and Prospects:
1. Economics is a job-oriented Subject
2. Economics equips students with
knowledge which enables them to cope with the frequent changing economic
scenario.
3. Economics provides valuable inputs
for the various avenues of employment.
4. Economics creates awareness about
Banks and Banking facilities which have become an integral part of our
contemporary society.
5. Economics is applicable to everyday
living.
DEPARTMENT
OF ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
The Subject of Environmental Studies (EVS) is today a
very important Study as the protection of the environment is the concern of all
the people of our globe. Due to its immense importance, it is now a compulsory
Subject for Students of the VI Semester. Even Though it is just a general
course, it has benefited the students in many ways.
The course covers major aspects of conservation of our environment including
types of natural resources; various types of pollution – air, water, soil,
noise etc and their control technology. It deals also with social issues -
global warming, acid rain, rain water harvesting, etc.
Aims and Prospects:
The Department firmly believes that the Course of EVS offered in our College
will greatly benefit the present and future generation. Being a Franciscan College
whose Patron, St.Francis D’Assisi was a well-acclaimed patron of ecology, this
Department follows the ideals of Saint Francis and is greatly encouraged to
follow in his footsteps – to respect ourselves, to respect others, to respect
our environment.
